Marino Institute of Education hosted a launch event this week for Irish Studies Dublin, its new four week International Summer School in partnership with Iona College, NY. The event took place in Marino, Dublin with special guests Dr. George Mangiero, Study Abroad Program Director for Iona College and Mr. Robert Faucher, Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy.

The first programme will commence on 25th May this year. It will offer students six credits for the successful completion of two courses from a menu of six options covering history, politics, culture, language, religion and education in Ireland. Speaking at the launch, Institute President, Dr Anne
O’Gara said that the programme would be of high standard. “We intend to make this course academically challenging while offering students the opportunity to blend classroom learning with guided excursions and trips. It’s an excellent time of the year for this type of work.”

Dr George Mangiero said that the summer school was building on a long-established spring semester partnership between Iona College and Marino Institute of Education. “I’m delighted that we are involved in this new summer programme. All students who complete the course will be awarded six college credits by Iona College,” he said.

Welcoming the new initiative, Mr Robert Faucher said that it builds on the deep ties that connect Ireland and the United States. “There will be many young, and perhaps not so young, people throughout the US who have Irish links and will want a programme such as this to provide them with a

solid grounding in their Irish heritage. There will be others who will be attracted because of the influence of Irish culture globally.”
