Inclusive education, SESE and External Links

Head of Rannóg:  Dr Anne Ryan

The Rannóg comprises two academic departments (Inclusive Education; Social, Environmental and Scientific Education) and also incorporates the function of ‘External Links’.

The Inclusive Education course for undergraduate (B.Ed.) and postgraduate student teachers consists of three components (Special Education; Educational Disadvantage;  Development and Intercultural Education).  The course also provides all students with a three-week school placement experience in a special needs context, and contributes to the preparation of students for a four-week teaching practice placement in a ‘DEIS’ (designated disadvantaged) school.  There are three elective courses currently offered by the Inclusive Education department:  (1) ‘Managing Children’s Challenging Behaviour in the Primary School’  (2) ‘Teaching English as an Additional Language: An Intercultural Approach’  (3)’The World in the Classroom’.

Lóchrann: the Centre for Intercultural Education is an initiative of the Inclusive Education department.  The Centre aims to enhance the development of best practice in intercultural education in Irish schools, through its engagement in teaching, learning and research (link).

The SESE course for undergraduate (B.Ed.) and post graduate student teachers consists of three subject areas: history, geography and science.  The course for each year endeavours to provide all students with an understanding and competency in the development of both content and skills in each discrete subject area, while identifying integration and linkage of the three areas as outlined in the Primary School Curriculum (1999).  There are two elective courses currently offered by the SESE Department (1) ‘Gatherers and Growers’ and (2) ‘Eye on the Past and the World Around Us’.  An annual trip to the Burren is an optional part of the course.

External links are maintained with all relevant national and international educational agencies and organisations.  Students from Coláiste Mhuire are offered an opportunity to participate in North/South Teaching Practice Exchange projects.  These projects, such as the Student Teacher Exchange project coordinated by the Centre for Cross Border Studies in Armagh, enable students to broaden their teaching and curricular experience, compare aspects of the respective education systems, and explore the possibility of teaching in the other jurisdiction.  In the longer term it is hoped to create a cohort of young teachers, North and South, who have had experience in working in primary schools in each of these locations and will thus be able to influence future generations of pupils in prejudice reduction and greater mutual understanding.  Participation in these exchanges also serves to strengthen the links already forged between the colleges of education on the island of Ireland.

On the international front the ‘Réalt’ (Student Teachers for Africa) inter-college programme which is run in conjunction with Church of Ireland College, Rathmines and St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, was founded in Coláiste Mhuire. It sees a group of students working in schools and colleges in various African countries each summer.  The college is also involved in the Ireland / Zambia Teacher Education Partnership, and has recently established links with Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts and Northern Kentucky University, USA, with a view to developing student and staff exchanges.  Future students will also be offered an opportunity to participate in the Erasmus programme which provides for student and staff mobility between European countries.
