School experience is regarded as a critical element of the Bachelor in Education (Primary) (B.Ed.) degree programme and the Professional Masters in Education (Primary Teaching) (PME).  It affords the student teacher the opportunity to observe best practice and to put into practice, in the classroom, the theory and content studied in the different curricular areas.  School Placement is supported by courses which direct the students in preparation requirements and focus attention on specific strategies for school observation, classroom management, integration and key teaching skills and competencies. 

During their four years on the B. Ed. programme or 2 years on the PME programme we provide our students with a variety of teaching placement experiences.  We hope that all students will have the opportunity to engage in teaching placement in urban and rural schools, single sex and co-educational schools, multi-grade and single class situations, DEIS schools and Gaelscoileanna nó Scoileanna Gaeltachta.  All students also engage in a Special Education placement in their final year in MIE

While engaged in School Placement or Serial Observation, students are required to maintain a professional approach to the students and staff with whom they are working.  A very high standard of preparation is expected and a professional approach by students will be exhibited through punctual and full attendance, professional dress and demeanour and a willingness to harmonise their conduct with the accepted conventions of the school and the requirements of Marino Institute of Education.

Student teachers are observed during their school experiences by a team of supervisors who have a two fold role in supporting and assessing the students.  I extend my sincerest thanks to these supervisors for their commitment and dedication in ensuring that our students practice their skills and learn and develop their talents as teachers.

These placements depend entirely on the support and goodwill of schools, principal teachers and class teachers who support and guide our students as they go through their placements.  This support is invaluable to us in ensuring that our pre-service programme is relevant and meaningful for our students in preparing them for the Irish classroom of today.  I extend my heartfelt thanks to all those schools and teachers who welcome student teachers from MIE into their classrooms.  Míle buíochas.
