LEARNING DIFFICULTIES - LITERACY

This course focuses on children who are experiencing problems in literacy. Participants will be guided in diagnosing children's difficulties within the three strands of the English Curriculum. Through the use of assessment and case studies, it will outline practical strategies and ideas to ameliorate difficulties in oral language, reading and writing.

MATHEMATICS: OBSERVING TEACHING, CHILDREN AND MATHEMATICS

This course is based around a mathematics summer school for children. Each day the tutor will teach mathematics to children in a middle-grade primary school class while the course participants observe. Beforehand and afterwards participants discuss various aspects of the specific teaching and of teaching mathematics in general.

Get active, have fun!

A practical approach to PE. Participants will engage in a variety of activities based on the strands of the PE curriculum and explore other issues in PE such as SEN,  ICT, physical ‘fitness’ and fun activities for PE lessons.

TEACHERS SUPPORTING FUTURE TEACHERS ON SCHOOL PLACEMENT

School Placement is a central part of every teacher’s initial teacher education.  However it has gone through a number of changes in recent times. This course focuses on the many factors associated with School Placement today such as partnership, collaboration, developing learning- focused relationships, observation and providing feedback to students. The course will address the wellbeing of the student and cooperating teacher in the context of a whole-school approaches to School Placement.

SUPPORTING ALL ASPECTS OF LITERACY THROUGH DRAMA

This course uses simple drama strategies, based on stories, to provide multi- sensory experiences of the spoken and written text for children in the primary school. Teachers will experience a multitude of practical and enjoyable activities and resources, which will enhance both their teaching of drama and their delivery of the English language curriculum, particularly regarding oral and written language, reading and comprehension.

VISUAL ARTS: Exploring Print from an Arts Integration Perspective (MIE/NCAD)

This course unpacks a variety of print making processes that can be introduced and developed in the primary school. It explores the curriculum strand print from infants to sixth class thereby enabling participants to enhance their whole school plan with exemplars and a portfolio of print making, and looking and responding learning experiences.

MINDFULNESS IN THE CLASSROOM

A practical approach to introducing mindfulness to busy classrooms.

What does a Mindful Classroom look like?

·        Attention levels are higher while stress levels are lower

·        Well-being is enhanced (intellectual, spiritual & emotional)

·        Skills for coping with difficulties are acquired

·        A discipline of silence animates the school day

·        Positivity ensures that the classroom is a place where everyone matters

If you would like your classroom to look like this, then ‘Mindfulness in the Classroom’ is the summer course for you. This course will develop the skills that lead to higher attention levels, enhanced well-being and increased positivity, while reducing the stress levels of the teacher.

CREATIVE ARTS & LITERACY LEARNING

This course is designed to empower teachers to enhance student literacy and parent/school collaboration. Having engaged in stimulating experiential workshops participants should feel confident to stage a modified version of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ or other dramas. Participants will receive a USB key of digital resources to facilitate creative learning adventures suited to their own contexts.

DRAMA FOR ALL: PRACTICAL DRAMA FOR FUN, LITERACY AND AS A METHODOLOGY

A fun, practical approach to drama for teachers of all class groups. Participants will engage with a variety of drama strategies, enabling them to use drama as a methodology, a standalone subject and for developing literacy in their class settings. This course will develop drama skills in teachers, focusing on how these can be used in their classrooms.

DEVELOPING THE PRIMARY SCHOOL CHOIR

Pitch perfect in primary school! A practical approach to developing choral singing in primary schools which will involve lessons in choral technique, rhythm, breathing exercises, music literacy, choreography, exposure to fun and inventive repertoire, and most importantly, singing. This course will appeal to all those with a love of music.

This course will re-familiarise teachers with curriculum content, resources and appropriate teaching methodologies in the infant classes. There will be a focus on the integration of literacy and language learning with play, using Aistear - the early years curriculum framework.

SMUGGLING DONKEYS – A REFLECTIVE PRACTICE JOURNEY

The primary curriculum seeks to nurture the child spiritually, morally, cognitively, emotionally, imaginatively, aesthetically, socially and physically. Exploring these dimensions experientially in a range of relaxed settings, this course will not be limited to the cognitive dimension or confined within classroom walls!  Mindfulness, liminal experiences, classroom strategies and teaching approaches will all feature on a menu designed to encourage reflective practice and classroom research and to provide food for teacher-thought!
