This practical course on the outdoor classroom will focus on studying trees, rocks and soil, designing exploration trails, and constructing and using a school garden. Participants will identify, classify and hunt mini-beasts in the college grounds. The course includes a visit to the Botanic Gardens.

SHAPING UP WITH VISUAL ARTS: EXPLORING SHAPE ACROSS THE STRANDS
Participants will explore all strands of JUNIOR visual arts primary school curriculum through the lens of concepts and skills development relating to the visual elements SHAPE and SPACE. They will create individual works of art relating to the curriculum strands with a special focus on concepts and skills development relating to shape and space. ICT will be used to digitally document creative processes and completed works.

OMG: RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY IN THE CLASSROOM
This course will explore the beliefs and practices of some of the different religions that you may now be encountering in your classroom, in a very hands-on, experiential way. Experiences will range from visiting the Islamic Cultural Centre, engaging in Buddhist meditation, and entering into dialogue with Jehovah’s Witnesses. The course will also suggest ways you can manage and cater for religious difference in your classroom.

LOOKING AT TEACHING, CHILDREN AND MATHEMATICS
This course is centered around a mathematics Summer school for children. Each day for two hours of this summer course the tutor will teach mathematics to children in a primary school class (3rd or 5th) while the course participants observe. For the other two hours of the course the teachers will discuss various aspects of the teaching. The mathematical topics will include area, time, problem solving and proving.

CAN WE PRETEND TOO? CURRICULUM INTEGRATION AND MANTLE OF THE EXPERT.
This summer course will appeal to those who are looking for a new way to approach teaching and learning in the senior classes. Mantle of the Expert is an integrative, dramatic approach to the whole curriculum. Children work as experts in an enterprise and explore curriculum tasks from that standpoint. Participants will plan a ‘mantle’ for a group of children who will join the course for the last two days.

Making mathematics practical in the senior classes (3rd- 6th)
Developing integrated projects across the Measures strand, exploring 2D and 3D shapes, examining length, area and perimeter. Teaching and assessing problem solving in a meaningful way are at the heart of this summer course. Participants will work on practical tasks which they can develop and bring back to their classrooms.
