FACE to FACE COURSES                                        JULY 1ST – 5TH 2014
LEARNING DIFFICULTIES - LITERACY
This course will focus on children who are experiencing literacy difficulties in the primary school. Participants will be guided in diagnosing children's needs in oral language, reading and writing. Using authentic case studies this course will enable you improve children’s performances across the strands of the English Language Curriculum.

PRACTICAL AND FUN MATHEMATICS IN SENIOR CLASSES
Developing integrated projects across the Measures strand, exploring 2D and 3D shapes, examining length, area and perimeter and teaching and assessing problem solving in a meaningful way are at the heart of this summer course. Participants will work on practical tasks which they can develop and bring back to their classrooms. This is real fun hands-on maths for teachers!

VISUAL ARTS: EXPLORING SCALE, MOVEMENT & MOOD
Scaling new heights in visual arts …a practical and theoretical summer course for primary teachers who wish to explore scale, movement and mood in visual arts. This course exercises the head, the heart and the hand in relation to visual arts. All abilities are welcome, but creative risk taking is compulsory! (While this course focuses on the senior curriculum, many activities can be modified very meaningfully for the younger learner).

GOODNESS ME! GOODNESS YOU! RELIGIOUS ED. IN COMMUNITY NATIONAL SCHOOLS
 This course is designed to support teachers in Community National Schools as well as teachers interested in teaching in these schools. It specifically explores the aims and pedagogy of the inclusive, multi-belief programme ‘Goodness Me! Goodness You!’ being developed for the schools and will also offer opportunities for encounter and conversation with different faith communities.

TEACHING AND LEARNING IN THE EARLY YEARS CLASSROOM
A collaborative journey through curriculum methodologies.
Participants will look at play (Aistear), language, literacy, maths and SESE in infant classes through the lens of the curriculum. They will explore active learning methodologies through language, literacy and maths games. The course includes examining resources for the infant classroom and negotiating a maths trail outdoors.

LET’S GET PHYSICAL! PE FOR ALL CLASSES
This is an active, fun-filled course where activities will be undertaken in a practical, learning environment both indoors and outdoors. Participants will engage in a variety of activities based on the strands of the PE curriculum and explore other issues in PE such as SEN, ICT, physical ‘fitness’ and fun activities to develop flexibility, strength and conditioning for your PE lessons.

Would you like an opportunity to practice and brush up on your own Gaeilge with some of your colleagues in a variety of informal relaxed settings inside and outside the classroom? This is the course you’re looking for. MUSIC IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL
This course looks at all elements of the music curriculum - Junior Infants to Second Class- in a practical and enjoyable way. Participants will learn how to approach song singing, rhythm work, playing instruments, dance, listening to music, as well as exploring many ideas for performance throughout the school year. Suitable for teachers at all musical levels.

CREATIVE APPROACHES TO LITERACY AND NUMERACY USING ICT
Children naturally slide and glide through apps, games and interactive sites. If you’d like to explore simple and creative ways of using these digital tools in your classroom to enhance teaching and learning, then this is the course for you! Only requirements: imagination and a sense of fun……you’re welcome to BYOD (bring your own device) too!

TEACHING READING FROM START TO FINISH
Participants will be introduced to a clear understanding of key elements of reading instruction as outlined by the National Research Panel (i.e. phonics, vocabulary building, comprehension and fluency. Recent literature on balanced literacy programmes and effective literacy instruction will be examined in the course of developing a cross curricular literacy unit. Participants will explore ICT applications for teaching and learning specific phonics and vocabulary curriculum outcomes

LANGUAGE AND LITERACY IN THE EARLY YEARS
This practical, hands-on course will focus equipping participants to teach a wide range of early literacy skills in enjoyable, meaningful contexts. There will be an emphasis on teaching reading using big books, poetry, Language Experience Charts and levelled texts (guided reading). The course will also explore the use of Aistear as a vehicle for promoting language and literacy. The ‘writer’s workshop’ methodology in the junior classes will also be discussed in a practical manner.

TEACHERS SUPPORTING FUTURE TEACHERS ON SCHOOL PLACEMENT
This course is designed for teachers who either currently host students on school placement or are interested in so doing in the future. The course will examine working with adult learners, the stages of development of a student teacher and the types of skills used when supporting young people learning to become beginning teachers. Strategies for working with students at all stages of their development will be examined and supports needed by schools and teachers in this process will be discussed.

LITERACY: ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNNG
This course will look closely at the principles of Assessment for Learning (AfL) and practically apply them to the teaching and assessment of literacy in particular. The approach to this course will be interactive and discussion-based. There will also be a focus on providing practical resources that can be applied in the classroom.

LITERACY TEACHING FOR EAL LEARNERS
This practical and hands-on course will explore strategies for developing the literacy skills of EAL learners in the primary classroom. This will be an active and practical week in which we will look at activities, resources, games and useful materials which can be used to raise the literacy levels of minority language children. The course will focus on all aspects of literacy, including reading, writing, comprehension, and assessment.

ONLINE COURSE                                                       JULY 1st – 31st
TEACHER AND THE LAW
This is a hands-on practical course which is designed to help you navigate around the legal pitfalls in schools. Participants will be brought up to date with the latest cases and legal developments. New legislation such as the Admissions to Schools Bill 2014 and the Children First Bill 2014 will be examined and the latest High and Supreme Court cases will be reviewed Participants will have the opportunity to present their views, comments and queries reflecting the interactive nature of the course. A large resource file will be available for you to draw upon or bring back to your school.
