LEARNING DIFFICULTIES - LITERACY

This course will focus on children who are experiencing literacy difficulties in the primary school. Participants will be guided in diagnosing children's needs in oral language, reading and writing. Using authentic case studies this course will enable you improve children’s performances across the strands of the English Language Curriculum.

MATHEMATICS: OBSERVING TEACHING, CHILDREN AND MATHEMATICS

This course based on a mathematics summer school for children.  Each day the tutor will teach mathematics to children in a senior primary school class while the course participants observe. The participants will then discuss various aspects of the teaching.

LET’S GET PHYSICAL! PE FOR ALL CLASSES

Get active, have fun!

This is an active, fun-filled course where activities will be undertaken in a practical, learning environment both indoors and outdoors. Participants will engage in a variety of activities based on the strands of the PE curriculum and explore other issues in PE such as SEN,  ICT, physical ‘fitness’ and fun activities to develop flexibility, strength and conditioning for your PE lessons.

BUILDING FOUNDATIONS FOR BEGINNING READERS

This course will examine the building blocks that are vital to the teaching of those in the early stages of reading.  In particular, it will look at the important role that phonological awareness plays as a foundational skill for beginning readers.   It will also look at the role phonics plays in reading development, its relationship to phonological awareness, and when it should be introduced.

How simple drama strategies can be used to provide multi- sensory experiences of the spoken and written text for children in the primary school. Research indicates these experiences lead to greater comprehension and retention of new vocabulary.

VISUAL ARTS: EXPLORING ‘PAINT AND COLOUR’ EXPERIENCES FOR THE SENIOR CLASSES       

This summer face-to-face CPD course aims to equip teachers with further confidence, competence and creativity to plan, orchestrate and evaluate exciting paint and colour experiences with children in the senior primary school. Through hands on exploration, participants will extend their painting skills and techniques repertoire and further appreciate the properties and possibilities of paint and colour media. Participants will be afforded the opportunity to reflect upon current classroom practice and co-plan schemes that evidence authentic progression and development specific to the paint and colour strand. The course aspires to equip teachers with a portfolio of themes to explore with the class group and more importantly enhance their own ideation processing so they can plan original and exciting artistic experiences the whole year round.

TEACHER AND THE LAW (ONLINE COURSE)

This is a hands-on practical course which is designed to help you navigate around the legal pitfalls in schools. Participants will be brought up to date with the latest cases and legal developments. New legislation such as the Admissions to Schools Bill 2014 and the Children First Bill 2014 will be examined and the latest High and Supreme Court cases will be reviewed Participants will have the opportunity to present their views, comments and queries reflecting the interactive nature of the course. A large resource file will be available for you to draw upon or bring back to your school.
