Course Content

The Music department provides music education courses to all students on B. Ed and higher diploma programmes.
The Music Education Course consists of a range of elements balancing practical, educational and theoretical issues. These elements include:

  •  Music skill development
  • Practical classroom teaching approaches
  • Percussion & instrumental playing
  • Group composition and performance:
  • Music Education Issues: Planning, assessment, integration approaches and methodologies



Students on the B.Ed programme receive 63 hours mainstream music education comprising lectures and practical music workshops, divided between first, second and third years.
Students on the Postgraduate Diploma programme receive 30 hours Music comprising lectures and practical work. Again the course consists of a range of elements balancing practical, educational and theoretical issues
Along with the mainstream programmes outlined above, students can chose to engage formally or informally in various other musical activities and options. Second and third year B.Ed  and P.Grad.Dip programmes choose form a range of elective options, comprising 21 hours in addition to the mainstream classes. The music elective options currently offered are World Musics and Rincí Gaelacha.
Additional instrumental and vocal classes are organised by the Music Department and offered to those wishing to pursue their own individual instrumental and vocal interests while on campus.
There is a vibrant and eclectic music and arts scene on campus involving students in a range of music activities from traditional Irish music groups, popular bands, classical music, fusions, choirs, cultural events, arts weeks  The music department contributes regularly through involvement in college and campus events, external concerts and radio broadcasts.
