CAO Points Requirement Increases for MIE Courses

Marino Institute of Education (MIE), an Associated College of Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin, has seen increases in the minimum CAO points requirements for places on its courses this year. The most notable increase in points was for MIE’s Bachelor in Education Primary Teaching degree, which rose from 451 to 462, reflecting a higher demand for places on this course.

Commenting on Leaving Certificate students’ continued interest in pursuing a career in primary teaching, the President of the Institute, Dr. Teresa O’Doherty, congratulated successful candidates on their results and wished them well: “We are delighted that despite a global crisis in teacher supply, Irish school leavers continue to select primary-level teaching as their preferred profession. We are fortunate that the most able and talented of students pursue teaching, laying a strong foundation for the quality of our schools throughout the state”.

The points requirement for MIE’s Bachelor in Science (Education Studies) degree also increased, rising from 315 to 326. Students on this course prepare for working in educational settings outside schools, such as museums and galleries, as instructional designers, education advisers, and adult educators, among many other career options this course opens up for its graduates.

The four-year Bachelor in Science (Early Childhood Education) degree has also proven to be popular this year for candidates seeking to pursue a career in early childhood education and care settings. The minimum entry requirement for this year was 326 points.

From 2019, students will be able to apply for places on a new Bachelor in Education Primary Teaching degree through the medium of Irish. This degree is dedicated to preparing candidates for teaching positions in Gaeltacht schools and Gaelscoileanna. Leaving Certificate students will be able to apply to this course through the CAO in 2019. Further details on this course can be found here: www.mie.ie/oid

Reflecting on the new academic year 2018/2019, Dr. O’Doherty said: “We especially look forward to welcoming our new students to MIE, where our dynamic staff are committed to supporting young people in their transition to higher education. In addition to guaranteeing them an excellent education, MIE offers programmes that promote student social responsibility and engagement”.
