Biography

Dr Deirdre McGillicuddy is Lecturer in Education in Marino Institute of Education and is involved in implementing the Development and InterCultural Education (DICE) project in the college. She has developed and delivered the Policy and Practice in Early Childhood Education module to students on the BSc Early Childhood Education programme and supervises on the Masters programme in Early Childhood Education. She has experience teaching and researching issues related to Children and Youth Studies and has taught modules on research methodologies with children/young people and sociology of childhood. She has experience working with the Department of Children and Youth Affairs and the Department of Education and Skills. An experienced Froebel trained primary school teacher, she has extensive experience working with and listening to the views of children and young people. Her own PhD study, funded by the DCYA scholarship programme (as well as the Irish Research Council and Irish National Teachers Organisation), employed child-friendly methodologies in listening to the views of 100 children aged 7-11 years old on their experience of ability grouping in primary school. She has worked on a number of research projects exploring children and young people’s experience of the education system and participation in longitudinal studies. She has also published in the area of teacher effectiveness, pedagogy and children’s rights.
