Biography

Máire is Head of Music Education at Marino Institute (2002-to date) and lectures on Music and Integrated Arts modules on Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), B.Oid trí Mheán na Gaeilge, Early childhood Education (Sc.ECE) and Primary Masters in Education (PME). She is also involved in school and field placements, research supervision, as well as choral and instrumental music performance at the Institute.

Máire has had an eclectic career across music genres as a teacher, performer and academic. As a teacher / music mentor, she has worked in a variety of community contexts including diverse primary school, special needs and secondary school settings. In addition, she has worked as session musician, chorister / choral conductor and presenter at various festivals, performances and broadcasts. For many years, she taught and performed traditional flute at Festival Interceltique de Lorient, Britany. She is a member of the renowned classical music choral group Cuore.  In the music educational sphere, she was musical director of the National schools programme Beo Go Deo (1996-2005). She recorded a traditional music album Hills and Hollows (2010) with Josie Nugent. Her research interests include: Music Teaching and learning, Instrumental Musical Learning, Choral studies, Teacher education, Curriculum and Assessment, Irish traditional music. Her PhD (2018) investigated Instrumental Music learning in an Irish Bimusical context.
