1916 Leaders and Learners Bursary FAQs

This bursary is supported by the Programme for Access to Higher Education (PATH) Fund, which is managed by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) on behalf of the Department of Education and Skills (DES). The bursary is administered through the Leinster Pillar 1 Cluster of Higher Education Institutions: Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Dun Laoghaire (IADT); National College of Art and Design (NCAD); Marino Institute of Education (MIE); Trinity College Dublin (TCD); and University College Dublin (UCD).

The bursary award is €5,000 per annum for the duration of the awardee’s undergraduate programme (maximum of four years), subject to satisfactory progression (see terms and conditions).

The bursary aims to provide support for socio-economically disadvantaged students from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education.

To be eligible to apply for this bursary, students must be able to demonstrate that they are socio-economically disadvantaged and that they come from at least one of the following groups:

  • Socio-Economic groups that have low participation in higher education
  • First time mature students
  • Students with a disability, particularly students with a physical/mobility impairment or students with a sensory disability, students who are deaf/hard of hearing student who are blind or visually impaired.
  • Irish Travellers
  • Students entering on the basis of a further education award
  • Lone parents with a DSP means-tested Social Welfare payment
  • Ethnic Minorities

Students need to meet the residency and current immigration status or have leave to remain.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate their socio-economical disadvantage by providing evidence of the following:

  1.  Being eligible for the Special Rate of SUSI grant (€23,500) and/or
  2.  Being in receipt of a DSP means-tested Social Welfare payment

Students must be entering higher education in 2019, onto programmes that are greater thane two years duration.

Applicants apply via an online application form.

Applications for 2019-20 will open on March 29th and close on June 24th.

All applicants will be asked to provide personal details and asked to answer questions based on the following:

- Challenges faced in accessing education.

- Leadership roles you are most proud of (e.g. involvement in sports/extra-curricular, community, school or education, volunteering and charity, family commitments.

- Future Plans   

- Participation in outreach activities.

- Reference from a community organisation

Late or incomplete documentation will not be accepted and will render applications ineligible.

In order to verify their financial need and personal circumstances, applicants will be asked to submit supplementary documentation, see below for further details:

Receipt of the special rate (€23,500) SUSI grant:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        

  • Letter from SUSI confirming eligibility for current academic year OR P21/Chapter 4/Notice of Assessment (2017).
Receiving Means-Tested Social Welfare payment:
  • Social Welfare Statement 2018.
Ethnic minorities:
  • Letter issued from the Department of Justice and Equality confirming permission to reside in Ireland
  • Naturalisation and Immigration Services Person ID Number (INIS Person ID number).
Students with a disability:
  • Evidence of Disability or DARE eligibility letter.
Mature Students:
  • Permission for the 1916 Bursary Assessment board to confirm with the Admissions Office that you are a first time mature applicant.
Lone-Parent:
  • Social Welfare Statement from 2018 indicating receipt of Lone-Parent Payment.
Student from the Traveller Community:
  • Letter of support from relevant agency.
Reference from a school, voluntary, sports or Community Organisation:
  • Please submit a written and signed reference from a school, voluntary or community organisation to outline your contribution to that organisation.

All supporting documentation must be uploaded with the online application. If you are experiencing difficulty uploading documents it may be sent to the relevant email address of the institution by a closing date (this closing date will be announced soon). Incomplete or late documentation will not be accepted and will render applications ineligible.

 

Students can provide their personal statement in ONE of the following formats:

  • Written response (maximum 200 words)
  • Video (30 seconds long)
  • Photos (maximum 3 per section with a caption). Digital images must be clearly labelled & referenced in the application.

Applications will be examined by an assessment panel of nominees from all the institutions involved in Leinster Pillar 1 and an external nominee.

Conditional offers will be subject to a student accepting and registering with MIE and submitting proof of receipt of the Special Rate SUSI award OR one parent family payment OR other Department of Employment and Social Protection payments. 

Successful mature applicants will receive a conditional offer in July and all other successful applicants will receive a conditional offer in August.

The offer of a bursary is conditional and is subject to the following terms and conditions being met:

  • That you secure a place on a course in MIE and achieve the required academic standard to maintain your place. In the event that you are no longer undertaking a course at MIE your bursary will be withdrawn.
  • That you confirm your socio-economic eligibilty by providing either: 
    • Written confirmation you are in receipt of the Special Rate of Susi grant OR
    • Written confirmation of current means-tested payment from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection
    • MIE reserves the right to obtain updated documentation from you through the term of the bursary and should your financial circumstances change MIE reserves the right to withdraw the bursary.
