This course focuses on children who are experiencing problems in literacy. Participants will be guided in diagnosing children's difficulties within the three strands of the English Curriculum. Through the use of assessment and case studies, it will outline practical strategies and ideas to ameliorate difficulties in oral language, reading and writing.

A practical approach to introducing mindfulness to busy classrooms. Get active, have fun! A practical approach to PE for all class levels. Participants will engage in a variety of activities based on the strands of the PE curriculum and explore other issues in PE such as SEN, ICT, physical ‘fitness’, Active School Flag and the relationship between PE, physical activity and sport. The course will also explore lesson plans/schemes and other recommended materials for the teaching of PE and any relevant equipment required to implement activities.  Activities designed at preventing and improving posture and potential injuries will also be explored throughout the course. The course takes place in the gym at MIE with every opportunity taken to use our campus, playing fields and local area if the weather permits.

This summer course gives participants a unique opportunity to explore Glasnevin cemetery and Museum and Richmond Barracks. In exploring these environments with local experts and by engaging with professional historians, participants will develop the skills of working as historians. This course will encourage participants to think about how best they can get young children to ask questions, think critically, evaluate sources of evidence and develop a perspective, and use the above skills to argue their ideas and judgements. It should also help participants understand the complexity of people’s lives and historical events, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

This course uses simple drama strategies, based on stories, to provide multi- sensory experiences of the spoken and written text for children in the primary school. Teachers will experience a multitude of practical and enjoyable activities and resources, which will enhance both their teaching of drama and their delivery of the English language curriculum, particularly regarding oral and written language, reading and comprehension.

This hands-on course aims to equip teachers with the tools needed to cultivate and foster a classroom environment in which children are encouraged to express and discuss their mathematical thinking and ideas. Throughout this course, participants will explore effective mathematics teaching through the analysis of sample lessons, sample planning documents and engagement with practical and rich mathematical tasks. Participants will reflect on each task with particular focus on how it promotes the discussion of mathematical thinking in the classroom. The concept of a Maths Talk Learning Community will be introduced as a way to encourage students’ participation, engagement and expression of mathematical thinking in the classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to study a sample whole-school mathematics plan and suggest alterations that could be made in order to encourage effective teaching, learning and discussion about mathematics across the school. Course participants will be provided with a collection of hands-on and practical mathematical tasks and resources which they can use in their own classrooms in the future.

This course aims to enhance participant knowledge, understanding and practice in meeting the literacy needs of pupils from 3rd to 6th class. This face-to-face summer CPD course welcomes beginning and more experienced teachers who wish learn more about sculpture, paint and print in the primary classroom. Through hands on activities, presentations and group reflection, the course will explore the anticipated learning journey of children from infants to the senior classes regarding their artistic development in these strands. It will present on diverse artists who work with these strands. Upon completion, participants will have greater insight regarding how to plan, teach and assess these curriculum strands. In addition, participants will have a greater understanding of co-equal visual arts integration and opportunities for STE(A)M development (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths). Participants will have chances to self-evaluate their current classroom practice and pin point actions to secure its growth and development.

Due to the nature of our work as teachers, we all benefit from opportunities to nurture our wellbeing - which can be quite depleted at the end of the year. The combination of personal and professional content in this course ensures a holistic developmental journey enabling participants to reflect with greater clarity on their own wellbeing that of their pupils and the wider school community. Internationally research proves that mindfulness helps reduce stress, anxiety, exhaustion and increases clarity of thinking, improves our relationship with ourselves and others, our performance at work and our physical and mental health - enhancing our overall wellbeing. To bring mindfulness to children and young people it is necessary to begin with teachers, other school staff and all adults involved in the child’s educational journey. The course links closely with ‘Well-Being in Primary Schools – Guidelines for Mental Health Promotion’.

This summer course is an opportunity to answer these questions and to find out about a new resource pack Just Connections, Just Trade which can support your SESE Geography and SPHE lessons with 5th and 6th classes. Participants will come away from this summer course with new ideas and ways for teaching about Africa and about Ireland’s links with Africa, especially in relation to trade. You will receive a set of curriculum-linked lesson plans to support your teaching: these are based on active methodologies and reflective learning and will enable your 5th and 6th class pupils to understand and engage with the topics in a meaningful way that is relevant to their own lives.
