This summer course gives participants a unique opportunity to explore Glasnevin cemetery and Museum and Richmond Barracks. In exploring these environments with local experts and by engaging with professional historians, participants will develop the skills of working as historians. This course will encourage participants to think about how best they can get young children to ask questions, think critically, evaluate sources of evidence and develop a perspective, and use the above skills to argue their ideas and judgements. It should also help participants understand the complexity of people’s lives and historical events, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

A fun, practical approach to drama for teachers of all class groups. Participants will engage with a variety of drama strategies, enabling them to use drama as a methodology, a standalone subject and for developing literacy in their class settings. This course will develop drama skills in teachers, focusing on how these can be used in their classrooms.

A practical approach to introducing mindfulness to busy classrooms. If you would like your classroom to be a space where well-being is enhanced (intellectual, spiritual & emotional)and skills for coping with difficulties are acquired  then ‘Mindfulness in the Classroom’ is the summer course for you. This course will develop the skills that lead to higher attention levels, enhanced well-being and increased positivity, while reducing the stress levels of the teacher.”

Get active, have fun! A practical approach to PE for all class levels. Participants will engage in a variety of activities based on the strands of the PE curriculum and explore other issues in PE such as SEN, ICT, physical ‘fitness’, Active School Flag and the relationship between PE, physical activity and sport. The course will also explore lesson plans/schemes and other recommended materials for the teaching of PE and any relevant equipment required to implement activities.  Activities designed at preventing and improving posture and potential injuries will also be explored throughout the course. The course takes place in the gym at MIE with every opportunity taken to use our campus, playing fields and local area if the weather permits.

The primary curriculum seeks to enrich the child’s life and nurture the child in all dimensions of her or his life. Exploring these aspirations experientially in a range of relaxed settings, this reflective practice course will not be limited to the cognitive dimension or confined within classroom walls! Deep Talk, mindfulness, liminal experiences, complexity, autobiography, critical conversations, aesthetic approaches, holistic classroom strategies and meaningful teaching activities will all feature on a menu designed to encourage reflective practice and classroom research and to provide food for teacher-thought!

This course focuses on partnership, collaboration, observation and providing feedback to students on School Placement. The course addresses the role of the cooperating teacher in the context of a whole school approach to School Placement.

This course uses simple drama strategies, based on stories, to provide multi-sensory experiences of the spoken and written text for use with children in the primary school. Teachers will experience a multitude of practical and enjoyable activities and resources, which will enhance both their teaching of drama and their delivery of the Primary Language Curriculum, particularly regarding oral and written language, reading and comprehension.

A perfect way to prepare for the classroom this week-long Philosophy with/for Children course promises to provide a fun filled introduction to the internationally acclaimed P4C pedagogy, initially developed by Matthew Lipman and Ann Margaret Sharp over 50 years ago.  Whether it’s teaching well-being, literacy, drama, SESE, RE, or the new primary English curriculum, this blend of experiential learning with ePortfolio creation will enable participants to construct their own subject specific P4C resource bank. All in all, this engaging course represents an opportunity to learn the skills required to successfully embed ‘thinking time’ in the primary classroom.

This course aims to enhance participant knowledge, understanding and practice in meeting the literacy needs of pupils from 3rd to 6th class. The course is ideal for both mainstream class teachers and support teachers (SETs). Aspects explored will include reading comprehension, reading fluency, vocabulary instruction, genre-based writing, peer-mediated learning, peer tutoring programmes and diagnostic and standardised assessment approaches. Participants will be introduced to a range of practical strategies and resources to support effective literacy provision in the senior classes.

This summer course is an opportunity to find out about a new resource pack Just Connections, Just Trade which can support SESE Geography and SPHE with 5th and 6th classes. You will get new ideas and strategies for teaching about Africa and you will learn about Ireland’s links with African countries, particularly in relation to trade. You will receive a set of curriculum-linked lesson plans to support your teaching: these are based on active methodologies and reflective learning to enable pupils to understand and engage with the topics in a meaningful way that is relevant to their own lives.

This innovative summer course will be of particular interest to primary teachers interested in quality visual arts provisions in schools. This course will enable participants mediate children’s understanding and appreciation of canonical summertime artworks. It will equip them with an extended repertoire of techniques and an assortment of experiences for the more senior classes. It will permit them to plan more imaginative and curriculum informed schemes from a quality visual arts and arts integration perspective. This interactive, hands-on course aims to provide teachers with effective and practical strategies that will enhance their literacy instruction in the infant classroom. Course participants will be equipped with a range of tools that will help them to prepare and to organise the classroom for literacy learning. This will include developing strategies to enable infants to manage transitions, to follow instructions and to develop independence and self-regulation skills. Participants will explore the application of purposeful, child-led, play-based learning strategies to best develop emergent literacy skills across the infant curriculum.

This course aims to broaden teachers’ knowledge of content and methodologies that pertain to the primary school in relation to the following areas:

Participants will engage with a carefully chosen selection of resources that broaden their perspective, and provide suggestions that can be taken back to the classroom to enhance digital technologies in the classroom. They will be invited to consider the implications of the Digital Learning Framework, arming teachers with the capacity, confidence and technological self-efficacy required to lead/assist with a particular aspect of the school’s current and/or future SSE cycle(s) in digital learning.

Students with brain injury, including concussion, may have ongoing physical symptoms and may struggle with the demands of school. This course provides helpful information, practical strategies and resources for educators working with students with brain injury. It offers participants an opportunity to participate in training and access materials from international sources of best practice through digital learning platforms. Face to face presentations from rehabilitation experts, hands-on workshop-style activities. Participants will learn to: recognise the signs and symptoms of concussion/Brain Injury. Understand how brain injury differs from other disabilities. Apply new learning to differentiate and modify curriculum making accommodations for a student with a brain injury. Develop methodologies and interventions to create a classroom that supports student success.

 Give your pupils a real purpose and authentic audience for their writing.

 During this online course teachers will be immersed in the writing process. Participants will use a range of resources in relation to aspects such as idea generation, story mapping, character profiling, suspense, plot, dialogue and conclusions, in order to produce their own short stories. The editing and proofreading processes will also be explored, as well as various possibilities for publication of written work and generation of positive publicity for schools.

The online course in Early Childhood education aims to re-acquaint teachers with the work of the infant classes.

•It looks at teaching methodologies and gives sample lessons in each of the methodologies.

•It gives a rationale for play, describes how to set up a play sequence and how to use role-pay in the infant classes.

•It examines some of the content objectives for literacy and provides examples of how to implement them.

•It also focuses on oral language games, classroom management strategies, classroom organisation and assessment.

 

Participants will listen to podcasts, examine video footage, read text, access websites and have the opportunity to post thoughts and reflections to a forum.

This hands-on course aims to equip teachers with the tools needed to cultivate and foster a classroom environment in which children are encouraged to express and discuss their mathematical thinking and ideas. Throughout this course, participants will explore effective mathematics teaching through the analysis of sample lessons, sample planning documents and engagement with practical and rich mathematical tasks. Participants will reflect on each task with particular focus on how it promotes the discussion of mathematical thinking in the classroom. The concept of a Maths Talk Learning Community will be introduced as a way to encourage students’ participation, engagement and expression of mathematical thinking in the classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to study a sample whole-school mathematics plan and suggest alterations that could be made in order to encourage effective teaching, learning and discussion about mathematics across the school. Course participants will be provided with a collection of hands-on and practical mathematical tasks and resources which they can use in their own classrooms in the future.

This creative and innovative course will explore the potential of storytelling in the Primary Classroom from Infants to 6th Class. Participants will explore the potential of digital storytelling in Literacy, STEM and Sustainable Education through hands on practical activities. Particular focus will be placed on incorporating and planning for digital storytelling alongside the new Primary Language Curriculum. You will experience and use digital tools including Book Creator, Story Jumper, I Can Animate, Adobe Spark and Telestory to plan imaginative and curriculum based lessons addressing digital story-telling concepts, skills and related language development. Participants will experience first-hand the potential of e-portfolios to monitor children’s progression in digital storytelling. The Digital Learning Framework will be used to help participants identify current and future target areas for developing their own practice and use of digital tools within the classroom.

To bring mindfulness to children and young people it is necessary to begin with ourselves. The course also addresses the ‘Well-Being in Primary Schools – Guidelines for Mental Health Promotion’ and the new Wellbeing Strategy and Framework (2018-2023)
