Frequently Asked Questions

Applications for Marino Institute of Education (MIE) are made online (only) through the MIE App Centre. This can be accessed at https://appcentre.mie.ie/login. You will be required to create an account in order to apply. New accounts are created by entering a mobile phone number. A password will be sent to the mobile phone number entered.

Applications will open on 29th January 2024 and can be accessed via the following link: https://appcentre.mie.ie/.

The closing date for applications is 5.00pm Monday 8th April 2024.

There are 100 places available on this course in MIE.

In addition to your application you will need to supply the following:

• Passport size colour photograph (head shot only)
• Photographic identification, such as a:    
  • Passport
  • Drivers licence
  • Public Services Card
  • National Identity Card
• Leaving Certificate/GCE/GC(S)E Examination results (or approved alternative)* showing that the 2^nd level minimum entry requirements have been met. If submitting Leaving Certificate results, please ensure to submit a Certificate or Statement of Results only (i.e. a ‘Provisional Statement of Results’ will not be accepted). Further information regarding obtaining a Certificate or Statement of Results is available on the State Examinations Commission Website.
• Official final year transcript* showing that the 3rd level academic qualifications are met (i.e. a Level 8 honours degree with a II.2 result or higher).
• Certified copy of results* from TEG Level B1 Irish Oral Examination showing that a minimum of 65% has been obtained (or a pass at TEG Level B2/C1/C2). If you are applying for the PME through the medium of Irish the results required are TEG Level B1 Irish Full Examination showing a minimum of 65T habe been obtained (or a pass at TEG level B2/C1/C2.
• Applicants who are sitting final examinations and who are awaiting final results must provide a letter from their HEI confirming the date of the publication of final grades and the level of the course. Please allow a sufficient number of weeks for this to be obtained from your HEI.
• Application fee charge of €50.00. You will be directed to MIE online payment system upon successful submission of the form.

* Certified true copies – please see Q. 20 for guidance on how to obtain certified true copies of documents. Uncertified copies will not be accepted.

The cost for Professional Master of Education (Primary), in MIE, is €5564 per annum. Students are also required to pay a once off material charge payment of €295 at the start of Term 1.

The application fee is €50.00.

• When you have successfully submitted your online application, you will be redirected back to “My Applications”.
• There, select the “Payment Portal” button next to your personal details which brings you to MIE online payment system.
• When you select Log in, you must create an account, or, enter your user name and password, if you are an existing user.
• Select “MIE Students” from the drop down menu and then select PME Application Fee.  As part of the process, you will be directed to enter your PME application number and make the payment. The application fee is not refundable.

An accepted alternative to the Irish/Maths/English Leaving Certificate grade is a ‘Pass in University First Arts’. To obtain this, applicants must complete and pass relevant First Arts modules (please note that it is not sufficient to pass through compensation). It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the combination of modules studied is equivalent to a University First Arts. Please be advised that you may be asked to provide an official statement from the University/ Higher Education Institution where the modules are undertaken confirming that the results attained are equivalent to a pass in University First Arts.

In accordance with the Entry Requirements set down by the Department of Education and Skills, only candidates who have achieved a minimum of 65% on the TEG oral exam Level B1 (or full TEG B1 exam for those who wish to apply for the PME through the medium of Irish) or minimum pass in Level B2/C1/C2 (passing grade for B2 is 50% while passing grade for C1/C2 is 60%) in the last two years (22/23) are eligible to apply. TEG results prior to 2022 do not meet the requirement.

Yes, additional marks will be added to an applicant’s general interview score as follows:

• Candidates who achieve 90% to 100% in the TEG B1 Irish Oral (or complete exam) will receive 10 additional marks.
• Candidates who achieve between 80% and 89% in the TEG B1 Irish Oral will receive 5 additional marks.
• Candidates who complete the TEG oral examination and obtain 65-79% receive no additional marks but are deemed to have passed the test and are eligible for the course.
• Candidates who have passed higher levels of TEG (B2, C1 and C2) receive 10 additional marks.

If you have obtained a pass or higher in the TEG examination at Level B2/C1/C2 within the last two years (i.e. 2022 or 2023), you do not need to take the TEG Level B1 Irish Oral examination (or TEG B1 full exam if applying for the PME through the medium of Irish). Please ensure to upload your certificate with your online application. Please note If you are completing the TEG B2 exam as an alternative to having a H4 in Leaving Certificate Irish, then you must provide documentation confirming that you are undertaking same by the application deadline 8th April 2024, and you must have the results submitted by the 12th July 2024. If you are completing the B2/C1/C2 TEG as an alternative to the Leaving cert, but you will not have the results before the 2nd of June then you must also undertake the TEG B1 oral exam as we must have those results by the application deadline.

If you are awaiting your final degree results, you must state this on the appropriate section of the application form. You will need to upload a letter from the HEI confirming that you are in your final year of a (minimum) level 8 course and the date that final overall results will be available. It should be on letter-headed paper and be stamped and signed by a relevant office (such as the Registrar’s Office). Should you be successful in the application process, you will be offered a provisional place, subject to the receipt of confirmation of your overall final grade. All documentary evidence of meeting entry requirements must be submitted to MIE by 5.00pm Friday 12th July 2024

If you are sitting the Leaving Certificate in 2024 in order to meet a minimum entry requirement in a subject(s), you are not eligible to enter the 2024 competition.

Applicants must submit a copy of either the official Certificate or official Statement of Results. If you do not have a copy of one of these, you will need to order a copy from the State Examinations Commission . Please ensure to allow sufficient time for this document to be issued; and then you will need to have it certified before uploading it (Please see Q. 21 in this section for further details on how to certify documents)

The application is divided into 5 sections. Once all sections of the application form have been filled in and supporting documentation uploaded, you will be asked to confirm that the information you have provided is correct and accurate. Once this is confirmed, your application can be submitted.

In order to certify documents, applicants must bring the original document and a photocopy of it to a competent authority (such as a lawyer, Commissioner for Oaths, medical doctor, justice of the peace, university administrator, local law enforcement officer e.g. Garda Síochána, etc.). That authority must then stamp and sign the photocopy to certify that the photocopy is a true copy of the original. Applicants must then upload the certified photocopy to their application. Photocopies of originals that have not been certified will not be accepted. In the event that your HEI supports the online verification of transcripts, and you wish to have your document certified this way, please contact [email protected] with the details of the system used by your HEI before the application closing date (5.00pm Friday 8th April 2024).

If your Higher Education Institution supports the online verification of documents, you will need to do the following:

• Upload a copy of your final year transcript to your PME application in the document upload section relating to third level qualifications (this copy will not need to be certified if digital verification can be provided).
• In the drop down menu in this section, indicate that you will be 'providing digitally certified copies'.
• In the box provided, provide the details required to verify your transcript online (i.e. the relevant website link and pins or passwords needed to access your transcript).
• The Admissions Office in MIE will then verify your documents as per the relevant system.
• If it not possible for any reason to verify your transcript, you will be asked to provide a photocopy of the original which has been stamped and signed by a relevant authority (please see Q. 19 for further details on how to certify documents).

In addition to providing personal information, entry requirements eligiblity and previous employment information, you will be asked the following open ended questions;

• • Why do you wish to apply for the course?
  • Have you any work or other experience which might prove advantageous in pursuing the course?
  • What attributes or characteristics do you feel you have which make you particularly suitable for this course?

Your answers to these questions must be no longer than 100 words. You will also get the opportunity to add any other information that you deem relevant to the application , for example, any talents or skills you have or awards/achievements that you have received.

The closing date for applications is 5.00pm, April 8th 2024. All applications will be checked to ensure that applicants meet the entry criteria. All those who satisfy the entry criteria will be invited to an interview. Interviews for MIE will take place, face-to-face on the May 2024 (to be confirmed)

We expect that all candidates will be given their interview results by 7th June 2024.

You are not required to upload references as part of the application process but you must supply the name and contact details of at least two referees. These can be contacted at any time but not unless a place has been offered.

The interview is marked out of 100, and you will need to receive a minimum of 40 marks to pass. Information on the interview is available here.

If you are successful, you will receive an offer by email. You will be asked to log on to the MIE application centre where you can accept or decline the offer. In order to fully accept the offer of a place in MIE you must secure it by paying a €500 deposit, which is refundable only if the degree entry requirements are not met.

How to accept your offer:

1. Select "Accept" under action. Your application status will change to "Offer accepted"

2. Click "Pay Deposit", which opens the MIE online payment system

3. Select "Log in", to either create an account, or to enter your user name and password if you are an existing user.

4. Select "MIE Students" from the right hand side drop down menu and go to "F2 - PME Deposit"

5. Once payment has been approved by the MIE Finance Office your offer of a place will be confirmed

The PME course is sanctioned from year to year. Therefore it is not possible to defer an offer of a place until the next academic year.

The course will commence in early September. The exact date will be confirmed shortly.

Where an applicant to the Professional Master of Education (PME) (Primary Teaching) programme in Marino Institute of Education, Griffith Avenue, Dublin 9 is dissatisfied with a decision relating to admission to the PME programme they may appeal on the following grounds only:

1. that the selection procedure was not conducted in accordance with the procedure set out in the guidelines issued by the Department of Education and Science in the relevant year

2. that there was a gross irregularity in the conduct of the interview.

Appeals must be submitted to the Registrar of MIE within 10 days of the results being issued.

The fee for submitting and appeal is €100, which is refundable should the appeal be successful.

A minimum of 65% must be obtained in the TEG B1 Irish Oral (or Full TEG exam for the PME through the medium of Irish) examination in order to be eligible to apply for the PME. Evidence of this result must be included at the time of submitting an online application, the closing date for which is 5.00pm 8th April 2024. We regret that we are unable to accept applications where the TEG B1 Irish Oral (or Full TEG exam for the PME through the medium of Irish) result is not included or where the result is pending.
