1916 Bursary Scheme for MIE – Learners and Leaders

MIE 1916 Bursaries

MIE is a member of a collaborative cluster with TCD, UCD, IADT and NCAD recently awarded 40 bursaries to promote access to Higher Education for underrepresented groups.

The 1916 bursaries will support students from these groups over the course of their programme. Students will be selected from target groups currently underrepresented in Higher Education, including mature students, those from minority backgrounds and those with a disability. A significant number of bursaries will be awarded to lone parents, with those engaged in part-time and full-time undergraduate programmes eligible to apply. The bursary will provide them with €5,000 per year to support them in their studies. An individual can be in receipt of both a 1916 bursary and a SUSI grant, if they are eligible.

Minister of State for Higher Education, Mary Mitchell O’Connor, stated that “a priority for me … is to provide target groups with more opportunities to reach their potential. They broaden the options available to students from the target groups by supporting participation on a part-time basis. Initiatives such as these which have the potential to really help to break the cycle of disadvantage for many communities.”

Marino Institute of Education, through its guiding principles, seeks to provide education programmes which empower those living in/with more challenging circumstances by building an accessible learning community centred around the needs of the individual which respects and nurtures difference.
