Racism in Higher Education

THURSDAY 21st JUNE 2018 (9:30 – 1:00) at Marino Institute of Education, Dublin.

This is a free seminar, jointly organised by the Cultures and Academic Values Research Centre in the School of Education, TCD and Lochrann, the Centre for Intercultural Education, in Marino Institute of Education.

What is it?

While often overlooked in academic and broader popular discourse, Ireland has a long history of inward migration, with associated ethnic, linguistic, cultural and religious diversity. The significant surge in inward migration of numerous minority ethnic groups since the mid-1990s has added a richness to this dynamic.

Race remains a significant cause of inequality for minority ethnic groups across all areas of society. In the context of Higher Education, racism works to exclude and marginalise both minority ethnic learners and staff. This can be seen and felt both in terms of those who do and do not get to study and work within the academic space, and the experiences of those who manage to cross the threshold.

In drawing on national and international research, this timely seminar will critically examine the university as a site of racism.

Who will provide the keynote address?

Professor Kalwant Bhopal, Deputy Director of the Centre for Research in Race and Education, Professor of Education and Social Justice and Professorial Research Fellow in the School of Education, University of Birmingham will provide the keynote address.

Dr Karl Kitching, Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, University College Cork will act as respondent.

Professor Bhopal and Dr Kitching will then be joined be a panel of academics and activists to further interrogate the theme of the seminar.
