What is the Bachelor in Science (Education Studies)?

Education happens in all kinds of places and throughout our lives – not just in school buildings and not just in our early years. If you choose the B.Sc. (Education Studies), you learn about the many ways, times and places in which people learn, and how these have changed over time. You will come to appreciate how education can enhance people’s lives and how different approaches benefit different people at different times of their lives, depending on what they need to learn. Learn about the formal and informal educational opportunities available to people, whether it is their first or second chance to experience for themselves the benefits of education.

What will I study?

During the programme you will learn about adult, adolescent and early childhood education through attendance at classes, hands on learning, reading and skill development. The modules delivered on the programme encompass the themes of life-long learning, ethics and social justice, education and culture, and education policies and practices. The modules cover technology, the arts, curriculum and programme design, policy analysis and much more. In addition to the core modules you will select a specialisation module, in an area of interest, which you pursue through the first three years of the programme. You will also select an optional module each year.

Work placement

A work placement is integral to each year of the programme. This can take place in locations such as education centres, non-government organisations (NGOs), arts/culture and media organisations, community education programmes, programmes run by the Department of Education and Skills as well as in formal educational institutions from pre-school to third level and further education. All students undertake an internship in the final year of the programme in an education setting of their choice.

What are my career options?

The degree of B.Sc. (Education Studies) provides skills and competencies that are useful in a wide range of careers. Many opportunities exist in the area of education and training. On completion of the programme you could work as an adult educator, an instructional designer, an education officer, or an education advisor.

What other options do I have?

Due to the diverse nature of the programme, upon successful completion of this level 8 programme, students can continue to further study in the areas of training, development and education. They may also apply for the Professional Master of Education (Primary Teaching) programme, in MIE or elsewhere.

Please note: The Bachelor of Science courses are self-funded courses that do not qualify under the Free Fees Initiative. At time of publication, the 2023-24 tuition fee for these courses is €3000 per annum, payable by the student. This is different to the normal student contribution fee. Contact the Institute directly for details of fees for these courses in 2024-2025.

Students on the Bachelor of Science courses in receipt of fee-only SUSI grants (i.e. where no maintenance element is payable to the student) should be aware that SUSI will only contribute 50% of the tuition fees for those students and students must pay the balance. For the 2023-24 academic year this amounted to €1,500.

Currently, students in receipt of SUSI grants which include a maintenance payment to the student receive 100% of their tuition fees from SUSI.

QQI Requirements

Students with appropriate QQI (Level 5 and Level 6) qualifications, with a minimum of five distinctions, can be admitted on a competitive basis to this course.

Mature Applicants

Mature applicants must apply through the CAO by 5.15pm 1 February. A mature student must be 23 years of age or over on 1 January in the year of intended entry. The CAO online application facility for late applicants opens on 5 March and closes on 1 May at 5.15pm.

In mid-March, the MIE Admissions Office will email mature applicants and advise them to complete and return a 'Mature Student Supplementary Application Form'. The closing date will be 5.00pm Friday 3rd May 2024. Applicants will be notified of interview dates and times by the end of May. Please note that any offer is typically subject to fulfilling the minimum entry requirements for CM010.
