What is the Bachelor in Education Through the Medium of Irish (Primary Teaching)?

The Bachelor in Education Through the Medium of Irish (Primary Teaching) degree suits in particular, students who wish to teach through the medium of Irish. Graduates of the degree will also be entitled to apply for teaching positions in English-medium schools. There is an acute need for teachers in Gaeltacht and All-Irish schools and a teaching qualification through the medium of Irish is recommended to students who wish to work in those schools.

What will I study?

You will undertake a special course in Irish at the beginning of your studies in Marino in September 2022. As part of the degree you will study how children learn, what factors influence their learning and how our understanding of this has changed over time. You will learn how children learn language, how they learn to read and write, and how they learn to count and calculate. You will study Immersion Education, Early Childhood Education, Psychology and Sociology. You will advance your own knowledge of Irish and of the different curriculum subjects. You will learn how to teach those subjects through the medium of Irish and of the advantages associated with that. Students will learn how to open children’s eyes to the wonders of the Arts, about the importance of Gaelic culture, about the magic and mysteries surrounding them and the ways in which they can grow and develop healthily. You will also study for a certificate in Catholic Religious Education to prepare for teaching in schools under the patronage of the Catholic Church. The opportunity to study for a certificate in Multi-belief and Ethical Curricula in Diverse School Contexts will also be available to you.

School Placement

You will complete your School Placement through the medium of Irish only during the four years of the Baitsiléir san Oideachas Trí Mheán na Gaeilge (Bunmhúinteoireacht). You will have opportunities to experience a range of different All-Irish language school contexts. All of those School Placements could be in Gaeltacht schools and some of them could be in Gaelscoileanna. You will have opportunities to work in rural schools and in urban schools, in single sex schools and in co-educational schools, in single class settings and in multi-grade settings, and in DEIS schools. With regard to Special Education, you will complete your School Placement in an All-Irish education setting in Second Year.

Gaeltacht

As part of the Bachelor in Education Through the Medium of Irish (Primary Teaching), every student must complete a two-week Gaeltacht Learning Period at Easter in First and Second Year of their degree. There are no fees for those Learning Periods spent in the Gaeltacht. In third year, you will spend a week in the Gaeltacht completing various modules of the degree. In the fourth year of the degree for the final School Placement (ten weeks), students will be placed in Gaeltacht schools. Marino Institute of Education will cover the travel and accommodation costs associated with that placement.

“I always had an interest in the Irish language and as a teacher I would like to teach through the medium of Irish. I love that the entire course is through Irish. It’s amazing that we will spend ten weeks of School Placement in the Gaeltacht in our fourth year and that the Institute will pay for that.”
