What is the Master in Education Studies (Leadership in Christian Education)?

The Master in Education Studies (Leadership in Christian Education) offers participants the opportunity to advance their study in education and to prepare for school leadership within faith-based schools. It is equally suited to those who currently have leadership positions and to those who aspire to such roles. The course provides grounding in skills necessary for leadership, management and governance and offers a theological and spiritual background to help them appreciate, support and develop a faith-based ethos within a school.

Who is the course for?

This course is specifically designed for primary and post-primary teachers who wish to pursue leadership and management training for faith-based schools in a multicultural and pluralist society, and to pursue their own academic and professional development. The course is endorsed by the CSL - Centre for School Leadership. 

What will I study?

In Year 1, students on this course will study four discrete modules consisting of a common core module, and three specialism modules in leadership in education. In Year 2, students focus on an area of interest, related to Leadership in Christian Education within Education Studies, in greater depth. They will develop research skills and write a dissertation (20,000 words) on a topic relevant to Leadership in Christian Education. 

How is the course assessed?

Assessment is linked to the modular nature of the course and consists of a variety of assessments in Year 1, followed by a research proposal and dissertation in Year 2.

Early Exit Award 

Students have the opportunity to exit this course with a Postgraduate Diploma (in Leadership in Christian Education) upon successful completion of Year 1.

Minimum Entry Requirements

An honours degree (level 8) with second class honours or higher and at least three years teaching or equivalent professional experience. In exceptional cases students who meet the honours degree requirement but do not have the necessary experience may be considered for the course. Candidates may be shortlisted and invited to attend an interview and complete a written assignment as appropriate.  English Language Requirement IELTS Level 6.5 (or equivalent).

Delivery Mode

In Year 1, lectures generally take place two weekends per month on Fridays (6.00pm to 9.00pm) and Saturdays (9.00am to 4.00pm). In Year 2, students usually attend lectures early in Term 1 after which they will focus on their research dissertations.
