Guidance on Designing a Research Poster

Your poster should clearly and concisely communicate your research to a broad academic audience. It should be visually engaging, easy to read, and structured logically. Posters should be A0 in size and in landscape orientation.

What to Include in Your Poster

Posters should reflect the content of your submitted abstract and typically include the following sections:

  • Title – Make it clear, concise, and easy to read from a distance.
  • Author(s) and Affiliation(s) – Include all contributing authors and their institutional affiliations.
  • Research Topic/Aim – Briefly state what your research is about and why it matters.
  • Theoretical Framework – Outline the conceptual or theoretical lens guiding your research.
  • Methods – Describe the methodology used, including participants, data collection, and analysis techniques.
  • Findings – Highlight key results or insights from your study.
  • Conclusions – Summarise your conclusions and implications for practice, policy, or future research.
  • References and Acknowledgements – Include key citations and funder acknowledgements where relevant in smaller print at the bottom.

Design Tips

  • Use bullet points and short paragraphs rather than large blocks of text.
  • Visuals (e.g. charts, tables, images) can make your poster more engaging and easier to understand. Ensure any visuals are high quality and clearly labelled.
  • Choose a legible font (e.g. Arial, Calibri, or Helvetica) and use a minimum of 24–28 pt for body text, 40 pt for authors, and 60 pt for title.
  • Use headings and colour to structure your content and guide the reader’s eye but avoid overly bright or clashing colours.
  • Leave some white space to avoid clutter.

Useful Tools for Designing Posters

  • Microsoft PowerPoint: Widely accessible and flexible—set your slide size to A0 before you start.
  • Canva (https://www.canva.com): Offers free templates and an intuitive drag-and-drop interface.

Remember to export your final poster as a high-resolution PDF to ensure it prints clearly.
