Teachers who have a Primary Teaching qualification from another country can get a temporary teaching council number from the Teaching Council.  To get a permanent teaching council number they may be required to complete specific subjects or modules. These modules are available to complete at Marino Institute of Education.

Shortfall/ Temporary Students generally join lectures for the Professional Master of Education (Primary Teaching) programme.  Classes for this programme take place face to face on campus during the hours of 9.00AM and 6.00PM.  Classes cannot be taken outside of these hours or by distance learning. 

The cost per module is €400 (School Placement has its own application of fees, please see below). A discount of 10% per module is available if you take four or more modules (please note even if you only study part of the module you must still pay for the whole module).

Semester 1 Modules

  • Arts Education 1: Visual Arts, Drama & Music (5 ECTS)
  • Teaching & Learning: Approximation of Practice (5 ECTS)
  • Mathematics Methods/ Subject-Matter Knowledge for Primary mathematics (5 ECTS)
  • Language 1: English Methods and Competency; Gaeilge agus Múineadh na Gaeilge (5 ECTS)
  • Creative Technologies for Teaching and learning (5 ECTS)
  • Children’s Literature (5 ECTS)
  • Integrated Arts Education II: Integrated Arts, Music and Drama (5 ECTS)
  • Education Theory and Practice: Psychology and Sociology of Education, History and Philosophy of Education (10 ECTS)
  • Inclusive Education: Intercultural and Development Education, Inclusive Education (5 ECTS)

 

Semester 2 Modules

  • Social Environmental and Scientific Education (5 ECTS)
  • Physical Education (PE) and Social Personal and Health Education (SPHE) (5 ECTS)
  • Child Psychology and Early Childhood Education (5 ECTS)
  • Language2: English Methods and Competency; Gaeilge agus Múineadh na Gaeilge (5 ECTS)

School Placement and Advanced School placement

The following procedure applies to the School Placement for Aptitude Test Purposes:

  • In order to complete a shortfalls placement a student must successfully complete an entry interview, which is to include a presentation (e.g. where the applicant would teach an introduction to a lesson).
  • The interview panel will decide if the applicant is suitable, and if a school experience/ mentor support programme is required. 
  • The student will be asked to provide the names and contact details of at least two referees
  • The following charges will be applied as per the Institute Charges Policy:

- €400: Professional Studies module (attendance and assessment)

- €400: For each three week school placement

- €400: School experience/ mentor support programme

  • On acceptance to MIE, and in advance of commencing the School Placement for Aptitude Test Purposes, the student must provide:
  1. A statement of Garda vetting
  2. A detailed transcript from the institution they attended for teacher preparation outlining their Qualified Teacher Status (translated to English and certified if the original is not in English)
  3. Documentation from the Teaching Council stating that they are required to complete a shortfall in School Placement
  4. A certificate of proficiency in English Language (International English Language Testing System – IELTS) with a score of 7.0 or higher. Other aspects of this requirement are stated here: https://www.teachingcouncil.ie/en/News-Events/Latest-News/English-Language-Requirement.html )
  5. A certificate of having undertaken the Children First E-Learning course: https://www.tusla.ie/children-first/children-first-e-learning-programme
  • The student is required to attend Professional Studies lectures and complete a prescribed assessment for this module.
  • Students on School Placement for Aptitude Test Purposes are only permitted to take one repeat placement.
