Staff Mobility for

Teaching and Training

Why go on an outward mobility visit?

Staff Mobility supports higher education teaching and administrative staff to take part in professional development activities abroad as well as to teach and train students or staff at higher education institutions. Erasmus funded mobilities aim to improve the level of key competences and skills through increased opportunities for learning mobility and through strengthened cooperation between education and work. Mobility helps to foster quality improvements, innovation excellence and internationalisation at the level of education and training institutions and develop innovative and improved ways of working.

Staff Mobility can be used to start a project or learn more about a project that is happening in another university. Staff Mobility supports blended intensive programmes, allowing for groups of higher education institutions to jointly develop blended mobility curricula and activities for students as well as academic and administrative staff.

Who is eligible to apply for staff mobility?

To be eligible to apply for a Staff mobility for teaching or training, staff must typically have more than 12 months continuous service and be employed on a full-time permanent basis at MIE.

Preference may be given to applicants who are not in receipt of funding for other professional development opportunities.

Staff Mobility supports academic and administrative staff to take part in professional development activities abroad. These activities may consist of teaching as well as training periods (such as job shadowing, observation periods, training courses).

Furthermore, Staff Mobility supports blended intensive programmes, allowing for groups of higher education institutions to jointly develop blended mobility curricula and activities for students as well as academic and administrative staff.

However, setting up new inter Institutional Agreements will take time and for Spring 2025, staff can only visit universities with whom we currently have active agreements.

When selecting a partner to visit, it is essential to consider:

  • How the international experience can help you to develop a broader understanding of practices, policies and systems in education, training or youth work across countries.
  • The relevance of the mobility to your work, and how the experience may improve the quality of your work and activities for the benefit of students.
  • The opportunities for you to incorporate skills gained from the international experience.
  • The goals and targets for your personal and professional development.

What is the aim of staff mobility?

The aim is to promote and raise awareness by sharing best practices through activities in:

How are successful applicants selected?

Given the small number of places available to staff for teaching and training mobility, staff must submit an application form, providing a rationale for the visit. The application will be reviewed using the following criteria:

 The proposed visit must:

  1. Align to the MIE strategic plan
  1. Contribute to MIE across at least one of the following areas:
  1. Developments or enhancements specific to teacher education (from ECE to Adult Education)
  2. Growing our expertise and reputation related to current programme offerings.
  3. Growing our expertise and reputation in education research.
  1. Contribute to wider Staff development through the dissemination and application of learning
  1. The proposed visit must be relevant to the development of the individual’s role in MIE and their professional development goals.
  1. Participation in the Erasmus+ programme should be scheduled without any adverse impact on the student experience or the wider work of the Institute.

Applications will be reviewed by a panel of not less than 3 members of the International Working Group. The International working group is an ad hoc committee convened as required to ensure continuity of international programmes, including Erasmus+ in MIE. The working group normally consists of the International Officer, the Head of Department for Internationalisation, a Dean of Education, a staff representative and a representative of the Finance Department.

What are the requirements prior to outward mobility?

MIE will ensure that the selection and grant award procedure is fair, transparent, coherent and documented and is made available to all parties involved in the selection process.

Before staff depart on Erasmus+ mobilities, the participants must have agreed on a mobility programme with the sending and receiving institution

What are the requirements upon returning from Staff Mobility?

Upon returning to MIE, staff must disseminate learning via a written report to [email protected] which can be used in promotional materials to support Erasmus mobility

Returning staff must also disseminate learning and promotion via an International Lunchtime Session, which will be organised by the International Office.

The report and presentation should highlight the outcome and impact of the staff mobility and how it can be integrated and of value to MIE, including the evaluation of the activities, the validation and formal recognition - where applicable - of the learning outcomes of participants during the activity, as well as the dissemination and use of the project's outcomes.
