MIE Careers Service

Welcome to the Marino institute of Education Careers Service. Our aim is to support, guide and empower MIE students to develop the skills, competencies, attitudes and self-belief to engage successfully with the world of work and to make informed career decisions. The Careers Service works alongside academic staff to encourage students to become confident and competent learners and ultimately take charge of their own professional development.

We provide Careers information, education and guidance to students in a number of ways to enable them to realise their potential and the opportunities available to them as they progress through MIE.

In a world of endless possibilities and options, deciding on a career path can feel overwhelming and confusing. A degree in Education can lead to many exciting and interesting career opportunities. The process of identifying a suitable career path can induce a lot of anxiety, and it is often difficult to know how and where to begin. The following information and resources should help you begin the process of working out what you want to do.


The classic model used for career planning is a 4 step cyclical process:

  1. Know yourself
  2. Explore opportunities
  3. Make choices
  4. Take action

Your time in MIE gives you the chance to investigate and explore options and learn about yourself on the way. Preparing for the world of work and being aware of the opportunities available to you leads to informed career decision making.

Planning your future career and navigating the options available to you can feel overwhelming. The MIE Career Service is available to help. Profiling for Success

Profiling for Success is a series of online psychometric tests that can help you learn more about yourself and your strengths, which will help you to make informed career and personal choices.

  • EI Questionnaire Plus
  • Career Interests Inventory
  • Numerical Reasoning Skills Test (Aptitude Test)

  • Learning Styles Indicator questionnaire

The tests are exclusively available to Marino students. You will need the access codes that you have been given to access the series of tests. Before you take the test you should read this Profiling for Success summary.

Know Yourself

Your first year in College provides a wealth of learning opportunities. It can also serve as a chance to get to know your own strengths, weaknesses and values, and this self-knowledge will help you on your career journey. Research shows us that upon leaving college, graduates look for meaningful work. In order to begin to discover your meaningful career path, you first need to know yourself. In MIE we encourage First Year students to embark upon this path of self-discovery in a number of ways.

  • Create your student CV. This should reflect your new role as a third level student and the skills and competencies that you have developed while in college.

  • Develop your self-awareness. Reflect on what you enjoy doing and your values and interests. Explore the psychometric tests available to all Mie students. These will give you an insight into your strengths, weaknesses and interests and will provide with ideas for your own personal skill development. The access codes and passwords for the online tests will be given to you during your Transitioning to Higher Education Module.

Explore Options

  • Your work placements gives you the opportunity to engage in the world of work in a meaningful way. Use these placements to develop professional skills and observe professional relationships at work.

  • Where you have the opportunity to take optional modules, consider your choices carefully. For example, the DEIS module will give you the opportunity to engage in Community Mentoring and work with second level students to help them become interested in college opportunities. Use these modules to help you refine your ideas about your career pathway.

  • Put yourself forward for positions of responsibility in your clubs and societies. This can be added to your CV as it demonstrates your flexibility and willingness to take on responsibility.

Make Choices

As you progress through your course you will notice a shift in expectations and focus. You are now expected to take further responsibility for your own learning. It is now that you should begin to consider your options post-graduation and start to make informed career decisions. In third year you will:

  • Embark upon thinking of yourself as a professional. You may undertake a Module in Career Planning and this will help you to make meaningful career related choices. You can research career opportunities using our online resources.

  • Understand and plan for the Autumn Career Schedule of your final year. Your choice of final year Placement Provider should be given careful consideration. Furthermore, you should also being to think about your final year dissertation topic and try to relate to your interests or possible career goals.
  • Seek support from your Career Consultant as you make these decisions.

  • Attend employer based events and careers-based workshops to expand your skills and knowledge in relation to your options and graduate.
  • Further update your CV to reflect your growing professional skillset and competencies.

Take Action

As you begin your final year in MIE, you need to consider your options post-graduation. This year is a very busy one, you will be expected to grow professionally and personally while on placement. It is also expected that you will develop your research and academic writing skills and put these to good use as you work on your dissertation. As you develop your skillset it is important to update your CV to reflect your new set of professional competencies. Be sure to have concrete examples of your skills to discuss in interviews.
