*A Gaeltacht applicant or a student from the Gaeltacht must be a resident of an official Gaeltacht area in order to apply for the Accommodation Scheme. There is no guarantee that students who apply for the Scheme will qualify for the discount under the scheme as spaces are limited.
Specific Entry Requirements

- *TEG Level B1 Qualification (Pass 50%) or higher required.
Important Dates:
- TEG Examinations on Friday, 16 & Saturday, 17 May 2025. Registration is open now and will close at midday on 16th April 2025.
- Register for the TEG B1 exam
- This is the last opportunity for those undertaking the Leaving Certificate to complete the TEG B1 examinations before the CAO deadline.
Applicants who undertake the TEG examinations in February 2025 or applicants who have completed the TEG exam within the past 2 years prior to entry in 2025, i.e. in 2023 or 2024, must email a certified copy of their results to: [email protected] before Friday, 25 April 2025.
Applicants who undertake the TEG examinations in May 2025, must email a certified copy of their results to: [email protected] before Tuesday, 1st July 2025.
Applicants can forward the email they receive from TEG with their results, to: [email protected]. When applicants email their TEG results to [email protected], they must include the following information:
- Their CAO number
- Their name is it appears on the CAO
- The code of the course they are applying for (ex: CM003/CM004)

Accommodation in MIE
If you wish to secure on-campus accommodation in MIE, you must apply for accommodation before the 23 May 2025 (even when you are applying for the Bachelor in Education through the Medium of Irish). All the information regarding MIE on-campus accommodation is still available below. We recommend to secure the accommodation as soon as possible. Please ensure that you state that you are applying for the Bachelor in Education through the Medium of Irish when filling in campus accommodation forms. How to reserve a room:
- Submit a booking form
- Please allow up to 10 working days for your application to be processed.
- We will contact you to confirm that a room has been allocated, along with your Admin fee invoice (due within 48hs).
- We will also contact you to let you know if you did not get an allocation, and in this case, you will automatically be added to the waiting list.
- A signed Licence to Reside and recent photo ID must be provided before check-in via email only, along with all payments up to date. Information will be sent to you closer to check-in.
Important:
- Allocations are completed off-site; we are unable to tell you your room number or who you will be sharing with.
- If you send any special requests, such as a request to share with friends, we will do our best to facilitate. However, this is not always possible. While it is not guaranteed, the earlier you submit your forms the better chances you will have of securing your request.

What is the Bachelor in Education Through the Medium of Irish (Primary Teaching)?
The Bachelor in Education Through the Medium of Irish (Primary Teaching) degree suits in particular, students who wish to teach through the medium of Irish but graduates of the degree will also be entitled to apply for teaching positions in English medium schools. There is a dire need for teachers in Gaeltacht and All-Irish schools and a teaching qualification through the medium of Irish is what students who wish to work in these schools need. In this four-year degree, students will learn about Immersion Education, discover how children learn languages, the way they learn to read write, count and calculate. Students will learn how to help children discover the Arts, about the importance of Irish culture, the magic and mysteries surrounding them and the ways in which they can grow and develop in a healthy way.
What will I study?
As part of the undergraduate course you will study how children learn, what factors influence their learning and how our understanding of this has changed over time. You will study Immersion Education, Early Childhood Education, and Psychology and Sociology. You will Advance your own knowledge of the Irish language as well as the advantages of teaching primary school curriculum subjects through the medium of Irish. You will also have the opportunity to study for a certificate in Catholic Religious Education to prepare for teaching in schools under the patronage of the Catholic Church and/or a certificate in Multi-belief and Ethical curricula in Diverse School Contexts.
School Placement
You will complete your School Placement through the medium of Irish only during the four years of the Bachelor in Education Through the Medium of Irish (Primary Teaching). You will have an opportunity to experience a range of different Irish-medium school contexts, including Gaeltacht schools. Your Advanced School Placement will be in a Gaeltacht school. You will have an opportunity to work in schools across the country in urban and rural schools, single sex and co-educational schools, multi-grade and single class situations and DEIS schools. As part of Special Education in your second year, you will complete your School Placement in an Irish-medium education setting.
Gaeltacht
As part of the Bachelor in Education through the Medium of Irish (Primary Teaching), every student must complete a two-week Gaeltacht placement at Easter in First and Second Year of their degree. You will receive a grant to cover the cost of the Gaeltacht course, organised cultural events as well as accommodation and food. In the fourth year of the degree for the final School Placement (ten weeks), students will complete this placement working in Gaeltacht schools. Marino Institute of Education will cover the travel and food costs associated with this final placement.

What are my options as a teacher?
This degree suits in particular, students who wish to teach in who wish to teach in Gaeltacht schools or in Irish-medium schools outside of the Gaeltacht but graduates of the degree will also be entitled to apply for teaching positions in English medium schools. Graduates may also choose to work in the Irish-language media industry as well.

Leaving Certificate
Number of Leaving Certificate Subjects: 6
Minimum subjects at higher level: 3 (minimum H5 but see below for specific requirements for Irish, English and Mathematics)
Minimum O6/H7 in three other subjects
Specific Minimum Grades:
Irish: H3 (and TEG*: B1 qualification)
English: H7 / O4
Mathematics: H7 / O4
*TEG (Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge) Level B1 (pass 50%) required. The TEG Examinations will take place on Friday, 21 February & Saturday, 22 February 2025. Marino Institute of Education will reimburse successful students TEG fee who register for the course. Applications for the B1 Full TEG exam are now open and you can apply for the TEG B1 exam on the TEG website
Mature applicants must apply through the CAO by 5.15pm on 1 February. A mature student must be 23 years or over on 1 January in the year of intended entry. In mid-March, the MIE Admissions Office will email all mature applicants informing them if they meet the entry requirements.
