Do I need a student card to borrow?

Yes, you need to have your card to borrow items in the library.

How many books can I borrow?

Undergraduates can take up to 8 Long Loans and 2 Short Loans. For a full list of postgraduate, part-time, and other Borrowing allowances click here.

How can I renew Items?

To renew items, you have to log into your library account with your Moodle username and password. 

You will see a summary of the loans you have out in 'My Portal', as well as any that are overdue.

  • Remember – you won’t be able to renew books online that are overdue.
  • Select current loans and click renew beside each item you want to renew. You’ll see a new due-date for those items. The closer you renew to the due-date, the longer you will get. 

I have an overdue book, will I be charged?

Yes, fines are calculated for each day the library is open.

Fines for overdue:

• long loans €0.20c per day
• Short loans 5€ per day

One of the books I borrowed is missing/damaged, what can I do?

If you think you have already returned a book or you would like to report a book lost or damaged, please fill out

and submit it to us. We will search for the item(s) on the shelf and investigate replacement costs, etc. 

I cannot find a book

If you have searched for a book on the shelf and the trolley in the Library and still can't find it, fill out this form:

and we will investigate. Make sure to leave your details if you want to be contacted if we find the book!

I am a final year student, and I am not in a position to physically drop my books back to campus. What can I do?

Students can post their books back, at their own cost, to this address:

Note that Students with outstanding loans or fines may have their exams results withheld.

How do I reserve items?

If an item in our catalogue is not currently available, borrowers may place a hold on it. Holds may be placed online.

  • Search for the item you want in the Catalogue. If there are no copies available, you'll be able to reserve a copy. You have to log-in to your Library account to place a reservation. Use your network/Moodle username and password to log in.

  • Once you're logged in select the check box beside the item you want to reserve, then click on the 'Reserve' button in the tool-bar. 

  • Make sure to save your reservation or it won't work! You’ll get an email when the item is ready for collection and you'll need to pick it up within 3 days*

*The Library reserves the right to shorten this period for items in high demand

How can I access the ejournals and databases?

You can access ejournals and databases through MIE search or by clicking the buttons below.

I am a graduate, can I still borrow items in the library?

Yes! Alumni/graduate borrowers of MIE may join the Library by filling

upon payment of an annual fee (currently €100) which can be paid quarterly on the following dates:

Sept 1st (access until end of November)

Dec 1st (access until end of February)

March 1st (access until end of May)

June 1st (access until end of August)

Can I suggest a purchase?

As an academic staff, you can request a purchase by filling

If you are a student and would like to request a specific book, email the library. A librarian will get back to you shortly. 
Remember, you can also use the Inter Library Loan scheme.

I need access to another Academic Library, what do I need to do?

If you need access to another Academic Library in order to consult an item which MIE Library does not hold please complete

 print and sign it and present it at the Library desk. Your request will only be considered if:

  • The item is not held in MIE Library or a public library
  • You understand you will not be able to take the item out of the lending library
  • You present in the Library with a signed copy of this form

Please note that entry to another academic library will depend on the rules and regulations of the admitting library.

At least 48 hours notice is required before your Letter of Introduction is needed.

How to access CJFallon, Veritas, Folens, Edco?

To access CJFallon, Veritas, Folens, and Edco resources, you will need to log in to Moodle and check the'Collections, Resources, and Useful Links'section on the library page. On this page, you will find all the details to successfully access primary textbooks and resources.
