How to:

Find a Book

  • Use MIE Search to see if the item is available in the library.
  • Click on the title and you’ll see its availability and location code. If the book is available, take down the location code which will be made up of Collection (i.e. SL for short-loan or LL for long-loan, JFP for Junior Fiction Picture book etc., a number and some letters (the first three letters of the Author’s surname). You’ll need all of that information to find the book on the shelf.

An example location code is LL 301.072/MCN. If it’s not available you can reserve a copy. Short loan books have been integrated with the main collection this year.

Borrow a book

When you find the book you are looking for, you can use the Self-Service Issue Kiosk or the Library Desk on the ground floor of the library to take the item out on loan.

Renew a Book

Once you have started using the Library to take out books, you will be able to renew your long-loans online for a further two weeks, provided nobody has placed a reservation on them.

  • Log into your library account

You will see a summary of the loans you have out in 'My Portal', as well as any that are overdue.

  • Remember – you won’t be able to renew books online that are overdue.
  • Select current loans and click 'Renew' beside each item you want to renew. You’ll see a new due date for those items. The closer you renew to the due date, the longer you will get.

⚠ Please note – short loans are in demand and can’t be renewed. You also won't be able to renew overdue items or books that have been reserved by another student.

Return a Book

There are a few ways you can return your books to the library.
You can either:

  • Bring them to the Library desk
  • Use the self-issue kiosk
  • Use the book returns box near the staff entrance in St Patrick's building.

It's worth noting that you don't need to have your card with you to return books.

  • If visiting the library isn't possible, you can also send your books back by post. Please be aware that you will need to cover the cost of postage yourself.
Here is the address you can send them to:

MIE Library
St Patrick's Hall, Marino Institute of Education,
Griffith Ave, Dublin, D09 K4P6

Note that Students with outstanding loans or fines may have their exams results withheld.

Reserve a Book

If an item in our catalogue is not currently available, borrowers may place a hold on it. Holds may be placed online.

  • Search for the item you want in the Catalogue. If there are no copies available you'll be able to reserve a copy. You have to log-in to your Library account to place a reservation. Use your network/Moodle username and password to log in.

  • Once you're logged in, select the check box beside the item you want to reserve, then click on the 'Reserve' button in the tool-bar.

  • Make sure to save your reservation or it won't work! You’ll get an email when the item is ready for collection and you need to pick it up within 3 days*
